イギリスのクイズ番組 ‘Countdown’ では毎回冒頭に司会の Colin と Rachel の小話がある。
2024/02/22 放送回の小話を訳してみた。
Colin: Hello, everybody. Welcome to Countdown this Thursday afternoon. We’re back in business for another 15 rounds of letters and numbers.
コリン：こんにちは、みなさん。木曜の午後の Countdown へようこそ。今回も文字と数字の 15 ラウンドの試合をお楽しみいただけます。
And outside of the game, of course, we’ve been enjoying having Sara Davies in Dictionary Corner for the first time.
試合とは別に、辞書コーナーにはサラ・デイヴィスさんを今回初めてお招きしています。
Rachel Riley, business tycoon, Dragons’ Den, all sorts of stuff.
レイチェル・ライリーさん、彼女はビジネス界の大物です。BBC の Dragons’ Den などにも出演されています。
When it comes to a good business, what do you need? I mean, you need a product, you need a good place so, you know, the right promotion.
良いビジネスには何が必要でしょうか。良い商品（product）、良い場所（place）、良いプロモーション（promotion）ですね。
Rachel: Yep, PR.
レイチェル：はい、PR ですね。
Colin: And the right price, the Ps, the Ps. But the name, the name’s really important.
コリン：良い価格（price）も大事です。４つの P ですね。でも、名前もとても大事です。
So, we haven’t had a quiz in a while, so here we go.
最近クイズを出していなかったので、出題してみます。
Rachel: Here we go.
レイチェル：はいどうぞ。
Colin: So, I’m going to give you the name of a company.
コリン：僕が会社名を挙げます。
Rachel: Uh-huh.
レイチェル：はい。
Colin: You have to say whether I made it up…
コリン：その会社名は僕が適当に考えたものかもしれません。
Rachel: OK.
レイチェル：はい。
Colin: Or whether it actually exits. All right. A garden design company in England called Floral & Hardy.
コリン：あるいは実在するものかもしれません。どちらであるかを当ててください。では始めます。あるイングランドのガーデニング会社「Floral & Hardy」。
Rachel: That’s got to be real.
レイチェル：本物っぽいですね。
Colin: It is real.
コリン：本物です。
Rachel: Brilliant.
レイチェル：すばらしい。
Colin: It’s brilliant, isn’t it?
コリン：すばらしいでしょ。
（注：floral は「花の」、hardy は「（植物が）寒い気候でも耐えられる」という意味。）
Rachel: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
レイチェル：本当にそうですね。
Colin: OK. Would anyone ever call a fish and chip shop this? It’s terrible. Flying Nemo.
コリン：では、フィッシュ・アンド・チップスのお店これはアリでしょうか。ひどいですよ。「Flying Nemo」。
Rachel: (LAUGH) Probably. I thought you were going to go for The Codfather. Flying Nemo, I think probably.
レイチェル：（笑い）おそらく、ありそうです。The Codfather（注：シーフード料理店）の話をしているのかと思いました。Flying Nemo はありそうです。
（注：ディズニーアニメの Finding Nemo と掛けている。魚をフライにすることから、「ディズニーのニモをフライにするお店」といったニュアンス。また cod はタラであり、godfather とも掛けている。）
Colin: They’re everywhere.
コリン：たくさんあるんです。
Rachel: Oh.
レイチェル：あら。
Colin: You heartless people.
コリン：心ない人たちです。
Rachel: That’s terrible.
レイチェル：それはひどい。
Colin: Yorkshire, Southampton…
コリン：ヨークシャーにもあるし、サウサンプトンにもあるし。
Rachel: Oh, no.
レイチェル：いやですね。
Colin: Loads of them.
コリン：そこらじゅうにあるお店ですよ。
Rachel: Poor little kids, traumatised around country.
レイチェル：国中のかわいそうな子どもたちがトラウマになってますよ。
